Following Surgery:
Take the prescribed pain medication as directed, every 4-6 hours tor the first 48 hours
following surgery. After 48 hours, take the medication only as needed for pain control.
Bleeding into the bandage is common during the first 24 hours following surgery. Call
our office if the bleeding in the outer bandage is larger than a 2-inch circle.
Apply an ice pack to the back of the knee of the operated foot 20 minutes, three times a
day for the first week. This will help reduce swelling and bleeding.
Activity Level After Surgery:
Do not remove the surgical dressings. Your doctor will do all dressing changes in the
office on a weekly basis.
Do not get the surgical dressings wet. Sponge bathing is allowed but showering and tub
bathing are not recommended until your doctor has given you permission.
If you are given a surgical boot or shoe to wear following surgery, you will need to keep
this on, even at night during sleep.
Keep your foot/feet elevated higher than waist level as much as possible. Elevating the
foot and limiting the amount of time up will greatly reduce swelling in the foot and
promote healing.
Do not drive until you have returned to normal shoe gear or until your doctor has given
permission to do so.
If you are to use crutches or a walker, you may not put any weight on the surgical foot.
The operated foot should not touch the floor during ambulation.
